The Tequila Sunrise, with it’s warm bright colours evokes memories of sunrises on the beach. This straight forward classic has only three ingredients, tequila, grenadine and orange juice and served unmix to keep the three distinct layers.
The drink was created by Bobby Lozoff and Billy Rice the Trident Bar in Sausalito, California.
For decades, the Tequila Sunrise has been concocted with cheap orange juice and sickly sweet grenadine, and it eventually began to fall out of favour, as drinkers turned toward craft cocktails. But today, it can still be found on menus across the world.
Fortunately, bartenders have begun to make the drink with 100% agave tequila, fresh-squeezed orange juice, and real pomegranate grenadine like our own. The difference is notable, and bridges the gap between the generally dark days of 1970s cocktailing and that of our modern era.
So if you're making a Tequila Sunrise at home, which is a very easy thing to do - we suggest you follow suit. Because a well-made Tequila Sunrise featuring the best ingredients is almost as special as it's namesake.
- 50ml Tequila (Preferebly 100% Agave Tequila - but here is a great article to help you choose )
- 100ml Fresh Orange Juice
- 12.5ml Funkin Grenadine Syrup
Add the tequila and then the orange juice to a chilled highball glass..
Float the grenadine on top and garnish with an orange slice and a cherry
Did you know: The Tequila Sunrise achieved notoriety after Mick Jagger began drinking it, and The Rolling Stones dubbed their 1972 tour “the cocaine and Tequila Sunrise tour.” The drink has been a part of every good bartenders repetoire ever since.
