Ready to see the back of 2020? You’re not alone!
With a year filled with lockdowns keeping us inside, we’re definitely ready to get 2021 started. This year’s celebrations might not be the same as you’re used to, with bars and clubs closed and parties reserved for household and bubble mixing only. But, that doesn’t mean we can’t still make this year one to remember!
So, pull out your party hats, put on your dancing shoes and wave goodbye to 2020 with our top tips for celebrating the new year in (at home) style.
1. Make a festive cocktail
Nothing says new year like a great cocktail! Ok, we might be a little biased, but celebrating the new year with your favourite drink in your hand is one of the best parts of New Years. Just because we can’t go out to celebrate this year doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still enjoy your favourite festive serve!
There are loads of great ways to enjoy a cocktail at home. If you fancy yourself as a bit of an at home mixologist, why not create some tasty drinks from scratch? We’ve pulled together our favourite New Years cocktail recipes for you to shake (or stir) up at home this year. Our favourites include the voluptuous Pavlova Fizz and the tropical and twisted Sherbet Buck’s. Or, if you prefer a more traditional mix, we have a great selection of cocktail recipes to get you started.
Love great cocktails but prefer them to be made for you? No problem! Here at Funkin we have a whole range of options for easy at home cocktails. Our ready to drink cocktail cans and bottles are pre-mixed for you, simply pour into your favourite glass and enjoy! If you’ve still got some spirits laying around after Christmas, our cocktail mixers and shakers are for you! Simply add in a shot of your favourite spirit, mix together or shake, and enjoy!
Plus, our Christmas Cocktail gift boxes are perfect for celebrating together while you’re apart. Find out more about these boxes, and how everyone can enjoy cocktails together online, on our virtual parties post.
2. How about some karaoke?
Nothing complements cocktails quite like out of tune singing! Just because you can’t get out to a karaoke bar this year it doesn’t mean you can’t blast your favourite tunes. Our friends over at Lucky Voice have a great online karaoke experience for you to get stuck into this new years eve - simply head over to their site and check out the online karaoke option (there’s also a 14 day free trial so you can get some practice in beforehand).
3. Host a virtual new years party
You can still spend the evening with your nearest and dearest on new years eve, even if you are stuck at home. Simply set up a video call with your favourite app and invite everyone to come along and see in the new year together (you could even enjoy a virtual sparkler together when the clock strikes 12).
For Christmas, we outlined some great virtual party ideas for some festive fun, and these are also great for your new years celebrations!
4. Dress up
Hands up who’s been wearing their pjs to their work zoom calls.. ?♀️
Ok, ok, we’re all guilty of getting in our comfies a lot sooner these days. But, the new year is still the new year, and whether that means donning the perfect party outfit or pulling out that fancy dress costume you didn’t get to wear this halloween, it’s definitely a day to put the PJs away!
Stuck for what to wear? You don’t have to buy anything new! Simply pull out anything from your cupboard with sparkles and your set. No sparkles? No problem! Steal some tinsel from your Christmas tree and celebrate in style.
5. Jools’ Annual Hootenanny
If there’s one thing that hasn’t changed this year it’s that Jools Holland’s Annual Hootenanny will be hitting your screens! So, even if you can’t hang out with your friends this year, you can still spend some time with Jools and the gang.
This year Jools is going to be joined by Celeste, Sir Tom Jones, Michael Kiwanuka, Roisin Murphy, Rag'n'Bone Man, Rick Wakeman, Ruby Turner and the Pipes and Drums of the 1st Battalion Scots Guards. As well as a nostalgic look back at some of the performances from previous years.
6. Eat your weight in party food
What better way to get ready for any healthy eating new year's resolutions you’ve got planned than by filling up on all your favourite treats before the clock strikes 12? Plus nothing goes better with a celebration cocktail than some tasty canapes.
You can get pre-made party food at pretty much any supermarket, but here at Funkin we love experimenting and creating our own - you can check out our Christmas cocktails and canapes piece for inspiration.
7. Dance party
If you’ve celebrated the new year before you’ll no doubt know it goes hand in hand with dancing (quite literally hand in hand when dancing to Auld Lang Syne), and just because you’re in your home this year doesn’t mean it should be any different. Whether you live with your family, friends or alone, the 31st December is THE day to pump up the volume and dance like no one’s watching.
Why not use this year to finally learn that TikTok dance you’ve been seeing everyone do? Or even better, challenge your friends to a dance off or virtual dance party for the countdown to the new year.
8. Snuggle down with a movie
New years eve is always a great time for settling down with a film. There’s usually a great selection of films showing on TV, plus with streaming services, like Netflix, you’re never more than a few clicks away from your favourite films.
When it comes to New Years viewing we have one rule - the cheesier the better! (but really, any film will do). Some of our absolute favourite films to see in the new year include:
- Bridget Jones’s Diary
- While You Were Sleeping
- When Harry Met Sally
- New Year's Eve
- The Holiday
- Plus - any Christmas film you might have missed out on before Christmas
Whatever you choose to watch, complete your evening with lots of popcorn, snacks and how about a great tasting pre-mixed cocktail or two?
9. Huddle around a campfire
It may be chilly outside, but with lockdown rules and tiered restrictions we’re all getting a bit sick of staying indoors. Why not warm up your garden and spend some time outside this new year with a bonfire? These fires aren’t just great at keeping you warm though, they’re also the perfect for a little alfresco cooking! So, get your marshmallows, jacket potatoes and hot dogs at the ready for a new year to remember, and an old year to forget...
10. Get an early-ish night
Ok, ok, this doesn’t sound like a way to ‘celebrate’, but getting an early night and feeling fresh when the new year rolls around can feel amazing. Get some lovely fresh sheets on your bed, snuggle down with a good book and drift off ready for 2021.
